Welcome and introduction to the ENGYS User Group Meeting 2018.
Dr. Bensler will review past activities at Volkswagen on the industrialisation of the adjoint-based computation of sensitivity maps, and present current efforts towards establishing an interactive aerodynamic design process based on Reduced Order Modelling.
Mr. Pitillo will describe the integration of HELYX CFD unsteady solvers in the FCA aerodynamic development process, with particular care to workflows automation and to the methodological investigations to constantly increase virtual analysis accuracy.
Mr. Mosedale will look at how wind tunnel results can be used to develop and validate CFD practices for the 2018 IndyCar, and how these can be incorporated into ELEMENTS templates that facilitate multi-car studies.
Dr. Jackson will discuss the latest meshing and solver methods available in HELYX and ELEMENTS in the context of CFD for Automotive and Motorsports.
Dipl.-Ing. Gau will share an example of a nozzle optimization using HELYX-Adjoint together with shape morphing to highlight how every basic component can and will be optimised in the future at BMW.
Dr. Yamaguchi will discuss the uses of HELYX in the design and verification of torque converters, including examples where HELYX-Couple and HELYX-Adjoint show benefits in terms of accuracy and speed.
Dipl.-Ing. Brotz will review the use of HELYX in the Thermal Management unit at MAHLE Behr to perform CFD simulations as part of the design and optimisation of HVAC, engine & electronic cooling components.
Ms. Matsuda will describe the new automatic CFD tool implemented by Panasonic based on the software HELYX, which can be easily employed by general mechanical designers to complete complex CFD analyses as part of the R&D process.
Dr. Su will present several examples of CFD work performed in collaboration with ENGYS to improve the design of various mobile power units produced by Aggreko and introduce new advanced technology.
Get to know other users of our software over dinner to exchange ideas and discuss future trends in CFD.
Dr. de Villiers will discuss the latest developments and advances in CFD technologies at ENGYS to be deployed as part of HELYX and ELEMENTS.
Mr. Capra will present a glimpse of how wind engineering could be in the near future, and how open-source based CFD solvers can offer a viable alternative to wind tunnels in the prediction of static and peak wind loading.
Mr. Millar will discuss the use of hybrid RANS-LES methods at WSP as a suitable tool for the analysis and design of tall buildings under wind loading.
Mr. Joshi will present a few examples ranging from offices and shopping centres to data halls on how connecting the DSM with CFD allows IES to gain a greater insight into thermal comfort and design systems in built enviroments.
As part of the EPCC supercomputing centre based at the University of Edinburgh, Mr. Graham will discuss the advantages of High Performance Computing (HPC) as an accelerator for CFD workflows, including the HELYX on-demand service provided by ENGYS using EPCC's Cirrus cluster.
As part of the design and performance verification of full-scale powder production at SMS Siemag, Dr. Vogl will compare simulations of pure gas flow and water-air flow in a closed-coupled atomizer obtained in HELYX with experimental results performed at TU Darmstadt.
Mr. Nielsen will introduce the subject “democratization of simulations”. A brief history about what have been done to help the accessibility of simulation software. How Grundfos have started implementing vertical applications to increase the knowledge and understanding of how simulations can benefit the whole organization.
Mr. Geremia will introduce a new URANS based 6DOF solver to model resistance and motion of ship hulls in waves, including extensive validation work completed by CETENA using HELYX and HELYX-Marine in a large HPC environment.
